We finally got the new Coldplay single, "Violet Hill" from the upcoming CD "Viva La Vida" which is out on June 12th ...pretty good song, very much an alternative cut, but interesting and not at all sleepy as the band can tend to be on occiasion. the song is available to all for free this week, go to coldplay.com to grab it. the band will play a FREE show at Madison Square Garden in NYC in June, will have all details for you soon. In the meantime, let me know what you think of the single...The "Sex & The City" soundtrack is out soon, and while I don't love the Fergie single, their is a new cut from UK stylist Jem called "It's Amazing" that I dig in a big way. She is a great act, you should do yourself a favor and pick up her 2004 CD "Woken" which has some great song that you may know without actually knowing you know them...a name to remember is Leslie Roy, a new singer/songwriter in the vein of Avril; she has a hip sound a good songs. Single is "I'm Gone I'm Gone"...Underrated new show? "Eli Stone". The premise may have a limited lifespan, but the idea of being guided by visions to make a positive difference jives well with my beliefs..."Lost" continues to amaze this year, the last episode was OFF THE CHART; I beleieve Ben had Sayid's wife killed to get him to become his personal hitman...OK, the much hyped, much discussed (and, to be honest, much maligned by me) Madonna CD "Hard Candy" finally drops this week. I have spent some time with the record and it still isn't blowing up my skirt, but the single "4 Minutes" has certainly grown on me. We decided to give frequent contributor/You Oughta Know listener Mike Fagone the task of reviewing the CD, as he's a fan and is looking for something to like...here is his Madonna CD review...
I was less than excited when I heard that she was working with the "it" producers (Pharrell, Timberland) . I always liked how she found lesser known producers and gave them a shot. She hasn’t worked with such mainstream producers since 1994’s “Bedtime Stories”. That being the album that “Hard Candy” mostly reminds me of. While there is a lot of Pharrell on the CD (a little too much for my tastes), a lot of it is very reminiscent of older Madonna music - but with a hip hop beat. I feel like “Hard Candy” is a mesh of three Madonna albums - her self-titled debut, “Bedtime Stories” and “Ray Of Light”. A number of tracks feel like they could have been pulled from any one of those discs. My favorite tracks are “Heartbeat”, “Miles Away”, "Give It 2 Me", “Beat Goes On” (featuring Kanye West) and “Devil Wouldn’t Recognize You”. ‘Devil” was produced by Timba-lake and sounds a lot like “Cry Me A River” and “What Goes Around”. The song was co-written by Madonna’s singer-songwriter brother-in-law, Joe Henry. Henry co-wrote two of Madonna’s best songs: “Don’t Tell Me” and “Jump”. People will feel how they will about Madonna’s new album. They always do. That is how it has been with her since the beginning of her career. You either love her or you hate her. Will she attract a younger audience? Probably not. But they have been downloading the first single at a fast rate. Consider this fan someone who sampled the Candy and liked what he tasted.
Thanks Mr. Mike. Nicely done. We are wide open to guest reviews of this type, so if want to send your thoughst and reviews, I'b be happy to post it on the old blog. Finally, we end with a picture of the greatest T-ball team in the entire New England area...The Melrose Tigers!!!
