This Weeks Nutrition Buzz:
Here’s sue brady with ‘the WIC nutrition buzz’ of the week!
Do you see pregnancy in your future? Women who are thinking about becoming pregnant or could become pregnant need folic acid. Folic acid is a vitamin needed to prevent major birth defects of the brain and spine. To help prevent such birth defects, folic acid should be taken everyday before and during pregnancy. It’s easy to get all the folic acid you need each day just by taking a multivitamin or eating fortified breakfast cereal. Look at the labels of your multivitamins and cereal to make sure they say 100% next to folic acid for the daily value. Common foods also have folic acid including: asparagus, broccoli, spinach, romaine lettuce, lentils, black beans, peanuts and orange juice. For more on folic acid visit: folic acid info.org. This “WIC nutrition buzz” is sponsored by the department of public health’s WIC program…a nutrition and health program for pregnant women and families with kids under 5.
