Frederick Wildman Trapiche Malbec Oak Cask 2002
Producer Background: Established in 1883, Bodegas Trapiche was a pioneer in Argentina, utilizing the most advanced winemaking technology of the day. Seeing the need for quality European rootstock, the winery introduced the region's first French vines, establishing a legacy of high quality and forward-looking techniques that lives on today. Trapiche was bought by the Pulenta family in 1970 (traditional wine producers of Mendoza and San Juan) with the aim of projecting their wines into the international markets. They began an intensive transformation, both in the vineyards and in the winery. Today, Trapiche is a modern winery using state of the art equipment and cutting edge practices. The winemaking team is headed by chief oenologist Daniel Pi.
Wine Type: Dry Red
Country: Argentina
Region: Mendoza
Vinification: Grapes are manually harvested from Las Palmas (2,460 ft) and 1883 (2,300 ft) vineyards in the Mendoza Province in small plastic crates. (This latter vineyard has been cited by world renowned viticulturist Dr. Richard Smart as an example of "world best practices".) After passing through the sorting table, the lots are crushed, destemmed, and allowed to macerate and ferment individually in small vats for at least 25 days. The musts are then gently pressed pneumatically and malolactic begins naturally. The individual lots are racked into French and American oak barrels and aged for 12 months. The lots are then blended, lightly filtered and bottled.
Tasting Notes: Intense and deep red violet color; sweet aromas of blackberry and plum with a touch of black pepper, smoke and vanilla. Velevety texture with soft tannins on the long finish.
Food Match: venison, roasts, red meat, grilled meats

Frederick Wildman Trapiche Chardonnay 2003
Producer Background: Established in 1883, Bodegas Trapiche was a pioneer in Argentina, utilizing the most advanced winemaking technology of the day. Seeing the need for quality European rootstock, the winery introduced the region's first French vines, establishing a legacy of high quality and forward-looking techniques that lives on today. Wine Type: Dry White
Country: Argentina
Region: Mendoza
Vinification: The grapes are selected from Trapiche's vineyard holdings (Las Palamas and 1883 vineyards) as well as from contract growers, if necessary and in order to assure high quality fruit. All the fruit is hand harvested and transported back to the winery in small plastic crates to avoid damage. For the Chardonnay, the fruit is destemmed, and allowed to macerate for one hour at 41°F. It is then lightly pressed pneumatically and allowed to cold settle for 36 hours; fermentation is also thermoregulated (59°F) for a duration of 21 days. A small percentage is aged in older oak barrels, the rest in stainless steel before being lightly filtered and bottled.
Tasting Notes: Brilliant, yellow color with green hues. Fruity aroma of red apples and ripe pineapple. Clean, dry taste, with a fresh acidity and soft, long-lasting finish.
Food Match: shellfish, pork, fish, crab, Asian cuisine |
