"Hostage"

Dear Mattress Discounters Dream Zone,
I worked in retail for 15 years. I have had a new job in another field for 6 years. I have a recurring dream where I have to work in the store I worked at for 15 yrs. for one more day. When I go in to work I can never find my locker in our employee room. In the dream I either have to work at the Service Desk or on the sales floor. If I have to work at the Service Desk there is always a long line and I don\'t know how to run the registers, all the procedures have changed. If I have to work on the sales floor it is always a mess with clothes all over the floor. I usually wake up before the dream is finished and I have worked the full day.

-Susan, 40.

Lauri:
Can you say job stress? Even though you have moved into a different field of work, retail has become your personal recurring symbol for stress on the job. You get this dream whenever you are feeling unprepared in real life or whenever you may be up against a deadline or when things seem to pile up on you. Even though you have left retail far behind you, stress is something that never seems to go away! Just look at it this way, if your job - or life for that matter - weren't full of challenges... gosh, how boring would that be?!

Susan:
I have been wondering for so long why I keep having this dream. I think it must explain why at times I have had the dream when I have been concerned about personal finances. The worry that I would have to go back and work there, also when I have been concerned about my status at my current job.

Now I will have to pay closer attention to what is going on in my life when I have the dream.
